Walking & Nature
Dare we say, autumn could be our favourite time of the year for getting out for those much-needed walks and immersing yourself in nature. While summer brings blue skies and warm days, autumn in Dumfries & Galloway paints the landscape in golden hues and fills the air with cosy seasonal charm.
Here is just a few of the areas you could explore from Coastal Kippford:
- Galloway Forest Park — Expansive and beautiful. Autumn brings changing foliage, calm lochs, mushroom foraging (with care), and crisp clear air. The forest is also a Dark Sky Park, so if you stay on into evening, you might catch some spectacular stars. You can also head to the Red Deer Range to see some of the beautiful creatures up close!
- Coastal Walks — Kippford is right on the Solway Firth, and there are many coastal paths to explore: salt marshes, estuary views, birdlife (especially waders and geese as migration begins). You can set off from the park and walk through the woods to nearby areas including Kippford front, Rockcliffe, Colvend and Sandy Hills.
- Woodland Walks & Forests — Mabie Forest near Dumfries is lovely for family-friendly woodland trails and cycling. There’s a café at the start of the forest and the trails suit a wide range of experience.
- Cycling – Cycling around Coastal Kippford area is a delight for riders of all levels, thanks to a mix of forest trails, coastal routes and quieter country lanes. Dalbeattie Forest is part of the well-known 7stanes site, offering everything from gentle, family-friendly forest rides to more challenging red-grade tracks with rock features and steep climbs.
Wildlife
Dumfries & Galloway is a haven for wildlife. With its diverse landscapes of rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and sweeping coastlines, it is the perfect backdrop for nature to thrive.
From the majestic red kites soaring above the countryside to the playful red squirrels darting through forests, the region is alive with character and charm. Autumn is a particularly special time, as migrating geese and wading birds arrive along the Solway Firth, deer can be spotted in the forests, and the woodlands burst with fungi and seasonal colour.

- Bird migration & nature reserves — RSPB Mersehead (15 minute drive from Coastal Kippford) is excellent for seeing migrating geese, ducks and waders in autumn.
- Red squirrels, deer, autumn flora & fungi — As you walk through the woods and forests, keep your eyes peeled for forest mammals, changing colours and the autumn fungi.
- Red kite spotting – Just 25 minutes from the park, you will find the Red Kite Centre in Laurieston. This is a feeding station and visitor centre where you can watch the Red Kites being fed with amazing displays of flight and feeding interactions.
Places & Attractions
- Threave Garden – Tucked just a mile west of Castle Douglas, Threave Garden & Nature Reserve is a joyful blend of horticulture, history and wildlife. Part of the National Trust, the gardens sit amid a much larger nature reserve, where wetlands, woodlands and grasslands are being nurtured to support birds, bats, and other wildlife. There’s also a café onsite!
- Drumlanrig Castle & Country Estate — Dramatic yet welcoming, Drumlanrig Castle & Country Estate is one of Dumfries & Galloway’s crown jewels. Set on the vast Queensberry Estate, the castle itself is a late-17th-century Renaissance masterpiece set in striking pink sandstone, with lavish interiors, historic art, and gardens to match. Surrounding the castle are 40-plus acres of formal gardens, woodland walks, a plant centre, adventure playground for families, cycling and hiking trails, and a tearoom for those warming autumn drinks.
- Bainloch Deer Park – Just down the road from Coastal Kippford, you will find Bainloch Deer Park. A stunning spot where you can watch deer in their natural habitat from the comfort of the café and outdoor seating area. They also offer guided tours through the deer park and photography tours too! A must visit while in the area.
- Ernespie Farm – In Castle Douglas you’ll find Ernespie Farm, a place of fun for the whole family. The outdoor area is home to many farm animals including goats and rabbits that you can feed. The indoor barn has a large soft play, café and shop. The perfect place for a rainy day.
- Golf – We’re fortunate to be surrounded by a range of golf courses. On our doorstep, you’ll find Craigieknowes Golf Course – why not stop for a round of golf and a drink at the Tee Bar next door? A bit further down the road, you’ll also find Colvend Golf Club, a testing 18-hole parkland course situated on the Solway Coast with views of the sea.
- Forrest Estate Experiences – Forrest Estate Experiences is a renowned prestigious Shooting School, offering expert guidance on a variety of country sports. Nestled within a stunning 11,000-acre estate they also offer hunting, fishing, shooting and 4×4 off roading.

Be Prepared for the Autumn Weather!
A few things that may be worth packing for your autumn trip to us:
- Layers! Mornings and evenings can be chilly; midday can still be mild. A waterproof layer is essential.
- Good walking boots or shoes, especially for woodland and coastal paths (which may be muddy).
- Binoculars or a good camera lens for wildlife & birdwatching.
- Check event dates in advance. Some are annual; others may shift or have limited tickets.
- On wetter days, museums, historic houses, cafés and indoor arts events are great fallbacks.
